Smith gives his definition of objectivity in contrast to Emmanuel Kant. Smith shows that there are facts and truth, and how people interact with them. Smith shows that there is reliability in the translation of the books of the Bible, and that they are factual. Smith looks at the effect of the gospel writers repostition us with objectivity, so that we can make an assessment. He uses Luke 1 as an example. Smith shows that if we look at the public events, then we see the public ministry of Christ, and is this sufficient to explain both the energy of those who wrote the New Testament, and their level of hostility. He looks at Matthew as a case study. Smith shows that the calmness of the gospels is so remarkable, and that this makes the miracles. He adds that they also reflect Christ's compassion. He shows that the records of those who are not enthusiastic support those who are enthusiastic.
