Gibson looks at the things that we live for. He explores what it is like to be an alien, and how deciding to follow Christ turns Peter's readers and believers generally into aliens. Gibson explores how choosing Christ involves choosing pain, and how this is a witness to non-believers. Peter puts suffering into a heavenly context, so as to show what it means for heaven to be a person's new home, and for their citizenship to be in heaven, which can not be destroyed or removed, in contrast to Canaan which was removed. Even in the mdst of pain God is working for our good, and thus we know what joy is. Gibson warns against slothfulness in our wealth and comfort.
