Five hundred years ago John Calvin was born in the provincial city of Noyon in France. Few theologians have influenced the world at large more than Calvin. His ideas and example shaped church life, scientific endeavour, the study of the Bible, and the organisation of the modern state. His influential ministry in Geneva, his extraordinary Institutes of the Christian Religion, and the widespread ministry of those who graduated from the Academy he founded, combined to ensure that his ideas were spread throughout Europe and beyond. On this important anniversary, international and interstate guests joined with the Moore College faculty to enter into a fresh conversation with this influential Swiss Reformer.
1 Corinthians is often regarded as Paul's makeshift response to random problems in the Corinthian church. This conference presented a more coherent reading of the letter by taking full account of its Old Testament and Jewish roots, along with paying careful attention to the Corinthian historical context. The result is a more compelling and theologically rich interpretation and a clearer apprehension of its relevance to the church today. As well as supplying concrete answers to many problems which have comparable manifestations today, on subjects as diverse as leadership, preaching, pluralism, sexuality and worship, 1 Corinthians models how to approach the complexity of Christian living with the resources of the Old Testament and the example and teaching of Jesus. Above all, it shows the importance of asking, how does the gospel of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ teach us to live?
There is no question that one of the most controversial areas for Christian life and ministry in the early 21st century is that of the place of the human emotions in Christian experience. Feelings certainly run high about feelings. Can we trust our feelings? Should we suppress them or should we indulge them? Does God have feelings?
h2 Stirred by a noble theme: Exploring the Psalms /h2 br / ul li Which book makes more statements about God than any other? /li li Which book do the New Testament writers quote more than any other? /li li Which book have Christians read, recited, prayed, memorised more than any other? /li li Which book has been disappearing from our church meetings faster than any other? /li /ul br / The answer to all of these questions is the Psalms. How can we get these songs back into our blood? Could our lives beat to their rhythm once more? Who is the God of the Psalms? How does his Christ rule over our dark world today? The faculty of Moore College hosted a special event September 12-13, 2012, to explore the book of Psalms.
h2 Face to Face with the message of Matthew /h2 The Gospel's narrative tells how the Messiah, Jesus, rejected by Israel, teaches, dies and rises and finally sends the disciples to preach his Gospel to the whole world to the very end of the age. b Dr Peter Bolt /b , Head of Moore College's Department of New Testament and Greek is coordinating 2014's School of Theology. "Across the centuries, Matthew's Gospel has been a special favourite of God's people, with its own special appeal and plenty of 'purple passages'. It brings us face to face with our Lord and Saviour, his teaching, his ministry, and it closes with the famous 'Great Commission' as he sends his followers out to make disciples of all nations" Dr Bolt said. Dr Bolt continued, "We stand as part of those nations into which the Gospel of Matthew shines as a light into the darkness." The School aims to help us to understand the message of Matthew and how it can be taught to those in the 21st century. h3 Conference Program /h3 ul li Matthew Jensen - Taking over the Heritage: Israel, Jesus, and his Church /li li Bill Salier - The Field is the World /li li Jeff Read - Preaching Matthew for a Year /li li Jane Tooher - Warming to Matthew's Women /li li Keith Birchley - St Matthew's Passion in Musical and Theological Perspective /li li Paul Williamson - Matthew's Use of the Old Testament /li li Michael Stead - Expect the Unexpected.
